Phoenix Rising Yoga Therapy IS the Missing Link in Recovery
Phoenix Rising Yoga Therapy (PRYT) combines classical yoga techniques and elements of contemporary body-mind psychology to facilitate a deeper connection with self. Michael Lee founded PRYT in 1986 as a result of his own transformative experience in yoga and study in psychological theory. When he was developing the different aspects of PRYT he discovered many similarities between the therapeutic approach of psychologist Carl Rogers and the yogic philosophy of discovering one’s own inner wisdom. Rogers explains this philosophy in the following way in his book, ‘On Becoming A Person’:
Experience is for me the highest authority. The touchstone of validity is my own experience. No other person’s ideas, and none of my own ideas, are as authoritative as my experience. It is to experience that I must return again and again, to discover a closer approximation to truth as it is in the process of becoming in me. Neither the Bible nor the prophets, neither Freud nor research, neither the revelations of God nor man can take precedence over my own direct experience.
This has become one of the fundamental principles of the Phoenix Rising Approach. What sets PRYT apart from a general yoga class and other types of yoga therapy is that while their primary focus is on the physical postures as a means to an end, PRYT uses the physical parts of the practice as a TOOL for creating an inner experience. The postures become a way into the body and then the real experience and opportunity for healing can occur.
Along an individual’s lifetime experiences are stored in the body. Our cells have the capacity for imprinting these events, both positive and negative, which then literally become part of our body: muscles, organs, joints, etc. Fascia is a skin like covering that surrounds each muscle and bone in our body joining or linking all of these parts together creating an information web if you will. It is believed that it is here, deep in the fascia that our past experiences can be retrieved.
PRYT does this by first using MEDITATION as a way of entering into the body mindfully. The BREATH takes the individual even deeper allowing more access into the physical, mental and emotional aspects of the body. YOGA POSES are held for long periods of time allowing information to be retrieved from the fascia web. All the while the client is invited to stay present to all that is happening in the body. The entire experience is INTEGRATED so that the individual has an opportunity to reflect and set up a goal. This process allows the client to be responsible for their own healing and fosters empowerment. It works with the body but also the mind in a complete way that allows real change to occur in life.
